Sena žemaitiška daina apie balandžius „Kūmai susiedai“, dainuoja Mosėdis, Vereta, Seda, Alksna. Here’s an old Samogitian folk song about pigeons. Balts respect pigeons because they perceive it as a symbol of children: in war songs sons riding of to the battle are often poetically called „pigeons”, in funeral laments children are often also referred to through the language of symbols – their names are not spelled out but they’re instead called „gray pigeons”. This is a song for a merrier occasion, one woman is simply asking a godmother not to harm pigeons living by the house, so as not to bring bad luck.
Translation of the lyrics:
Godmother, my neighbor, do not shew away the pigeons!
My little pigeons are not doing anything for you,
They’re just walking on the roof, picking at the chaffs,
My little pigeons are not doing anything for you,
They’re eating two grain each & laying two eggs,
My little pigeons are not doing anything for you,
They’re laying two eggs each & hatching two birdies,
My little pigeons are not doing anything for you,
Godmother, my neighbor, do not shew away the pigeons!
My little pigeons are not doing anything for you,

Vai, Kūma Susieda, nebaidyk balondiu
Mona balundelia tau nieko nedara,
Stogas vakštinėjė, spalius rakštinėja
Mona balundelia tau nieko nedara,
Po du grūdu lesa, po du kiaušus deda
Mona balundelia tau nieko nedara,
Po du kiaušus deda, po du vakus veda
Mona balundele tau nieko nedara
Vai, Kūma Susieda, nebaidyk balondiu
