Takai / The Paths – Kas Pramynė
A SANJOG-ATALYJA Collaboration
This is a famous Lithuanian folklore composed by the musicians of Atalyja, Lithuania on traditional tunes. The composition is choreographed by Guru Rasmiranjan Nayak of SANJOG, India, which is performed by himself and his co-artist Ipsita Patnaik.
SYNOPSIS:
The protagonist finds his father’s garden infiltrated by someone who trampled the green grass bed while walking across. He then finds under the green linden tree a young girl is swinging in a silk-bedded cradle. As he watches, a young boy comes riding a horse near the girl and swings her cradle. While swinging, the boy asked the girl – will you be my dearest? The girl answers – despite you swinging my cradle, I will not be your dearest; and walks away to her father who lives in the high hill.
Lyrics in Lithuanian:
Kas pramynė juodus takus
Per tėvo sodelį.
Mano tėvo sodužėly
Aug žalia liepelė
Po liepele po žaliąja
Stov marga vygelė,
Toj vygelėj, toj margoje
Šilkų patalėliai
Toj vygelėj, toj margoje
Šilkų patalėliai,
Tuos šilkelių patalėliuos
Gul jauna mergelė
Prijodamas paliūliavo,
Atstodams bučiavo:
– Čiūčia liūlia, mergužėle,
Rasi mano būsi?
Jeib ir čiūčia, jeib ir liūlia,
Tik tavo nebūsiu.
O aš eisiu pas tėvelį
Į aukštą kalnelį.

Lyrics translated in to English:

Who walked (trampled?) the black paths
across my father’s garden?
A green linden tree grows
in my father’s garden
Under the green linden tree
stands a cradle
Silk bedding lies
in that cradle
Silk bedding lies
in that cradle
In those silk bedding
A young virgin is lying
The young boy came on the horse.
he swung that cradle
and asked the virgin:
– Will you be my dearest?
Despite you swinging me
I will not be your dearest.
And I will go to my father
To the high hill.
