Traditional folk song from ethnographic region Dzūkija (South-East Lithuania). During the heathen Spring festival, which after the arrival of Christianity started to be identified with Easter, it was customary for young men to go from farmstead to farmstead singing folk songs in exchange for painted eggs and other treats – this tradition is called „lalavimas”. In the farmsteads where there were unmarried women, men would sing the folk song featuring a tree (sometimes called „a linden”, sometimes „a pear tree”) growing in the middle of the manor and young wine because it was believed that hearing this song during Spring will make the girl marry later that year. Translation of the lyrics:
– Oh, in the manor a white linden is standing,
The golden dew is on that linden tree,
Here, the Northern wind has blown,
Here, it blew off the golden dew,
Please, come out, young Mary,
Please, gather that golden dew,
Please, bring it to the smiths!
– Oh, you smiths, my dear brothers,
Please, forge me a golden ring!
– What will you give us? What will you present to us?
– I will give my wreath of rue to the first one,
I will give a silken scarf to the second one,
I will give the golden ring to the third one,
And the one for whom I will have nothing to give will have me
